The Patterns
Yarn and Needles
Quince & Co.
Bring your own yarn or buy from New Heights Yarn. Quince & Co. Osprey is specially selected for ease of use, pattern appropriateness and quality.
You are also welcome to bring yarn from your stash or source it elsewhere. We will assess your options together during your induction.
These patterns call for either an Aran or bulky weight yarn. We swatch to make sure your choice will work with the pattern, so other yarns may suit even when the pattern does not list them. That is why we gauge.
Loan Equipment
Borrow a set of needles free for your first two weeks. That gives you time to swatch and learn which needle sizes you really need before you commit to buying them.
The equipment is from KnitPro's Zing range, a great entry level set at a reasonable price and decent quality. New Heights Yarn has added extra notions and needle tips to the basic set, so you should have everything you need for Sweater School.
If you love using your loan equipment, you can purchase the set during a lesson. If you already have your own equipment, you are not obliged to use ours.
Questions, Answered
-
No. If you can knit and purl, cast on and bind off, you are ready for Sweater School. We cover increasing and decreasing together, one step at a time.
-
The Novice Sweater is the simplest. The Novice Cardigan Chunky comes second, worked flat with a button band to finish. The Novice Slipover looks simple, but the techniques are more advanced, so it suits an advanced beginner.
Any pattern in the Novice family can be considered. If one outside these three catches your eye, just discuss it with me first, and we will choose together at your induction.
-
Yes. These patterns are unisex, and Sweater School is here to help you adapt them to suit you perfectly, whether that means changing a sleeve shape or adding or removing length.
-
Patterns are purchased separately from PetiteKnit, through the PetiteKnit website or Ravelry. During your induction, we discuss the variations and considerations for each of the patterns on offer. You are encouraged to look through the pattern selection before the course begins, but please wait until we have talked it through at your induction to make your purchase.
-
No. You are welcome to bring yarn from your stash or source it elsewhere. We assess your options together during your induction, and we swatch to make sure your yarn works with the pattern.
-
No. If you already have your own equipment, you are not obliged to use ours. Loan needles are free for your first two weeks, and you can buy the set during class if you love it.
-
You have twelve months from your purchase. Most students finish their first sweater in 1 to 3 months.
If you want to go another round with Sweater School, perhaps with a different version of the Novice pattern, you can keep using the course material on the student hub. Any unused sessions carry forward to your second pattern, and you can purchase additional sessions if you need them.
-
Buy the Sweater School package first, then book your induction. You'll receive complete instructions on how to book with your package confirmation.
Inductions run on select Saturday afternoons. After that, Sweater School lessons happen every Saturday afternoon and Thursday evening.
